![]() Need to Know Nine A Method of Mastering Mathematics is a method of teaching mathematics through repetition and
making connections between units of study.
The program considers both traditional and modern techniques and maintains a balance that allows the students to be successful. Here is an overview of the
method:
1. All the students will begin with Depth of Knowledge (DOK) level 1 [RECALL] questions in 9 designated units. Some student will surpass this level in 1-2 weeks while others will take 3-4 weeks. 2. The next level of questions would be on DOK level 2 [SKILL/CONCEPT] in the same 9 designated units. This might take 3 months for some students while others might take 4-5 months. (Remember they are learning 9 different units at this level.)* *This is where many student would “hit a ceiling” in their traditional math class, especially if they are not able to retain information from previous chapters. However, in this program students haven’t been giving the luxury of forgetting anything. 3. Next, still within the original 9 designated units, students would be expected to solve DOK level 3 [STRATEGIC THINKING] questions, which are now much more attainable, since all previous concepts are ‘current.’ 4. Some students will thrive at level 3 and will move onto DOK level 4 [EXTENDED THINKING]. This is where gifted students will be challenged (instead of being given “extra practice” of concepts they have already mastered). Some students might not reach this level, which is why it is “exceeding the standards.” |
![]() the math helpER is a tutoring service currently offered in Westerly, Rhode Island. Unlike private tutoring, students become monthly members and are welcome to come as many days and for as many hours as they would like during the month. There aren't any appointments to make, schedules to keep to, or time limits to work around. Students could choose to use the service as homework help every evening or for an extended_period of time the days before a major assessment or BOTH!
